The American Ideals PAC Endorses Rep. Michelle Steel for California’s 45th Congressional District
We have endorsed Michelle Steel (currently representing the 48th congressional district) for re-election in California’s new 45th congressional district. Below are excerpts from the endorsement press release.
“We are very pleased to endorse Representative Steel,” said Betty Chu, former mayor of Monterey Park, California, and a distinguished advisory committee member of the American Ideals PAC. “We have long admired her advocacy for equal rights and are proud of her unwavering opposition to the sordid practice of racial preferences, which disproportionately discriminate against Americans of Asian descent.”
“While voters in this year’s elections are concerned about issues such as rising inflation, a faltering economy, and out-of-control crime, the Biden administration and far too many in the U.S. Congress govern according to the ‘racial equity’ agenda, which demonizes Americans based on race and politicizes nearly every aspect of American life with racial grievance,” said Ying Ma, president and founder of the American Ideals PAC.
“We cannot afford to send lawmakers to Washington who support or cower before policies and practices ranging from racial preferences to critical race theory,” Ma continued. “Rather, we need leaders like Representative Steel, who will continue to fight for equality for all.”
Steel was first elected to the U.S. Congress in 2020. That year, she was a staunch opponent of Proposition 16, which sought to repeal the part of the California Constitution—passed as Proposition 209 in 1996—that prohibits racial discrimination and racial preferences in public employment, contracting, and education. Prop 16 was defeated resoundingly by California voters by a 57 percent to 43 percent margin.
Steel also supported Prop 209 in 1996 and has condemned the complicated schemes of racial preferences used by elite universities, such as Harvard, against Asian applicants in the admissions process.
Chu, a former candidate for U.S. Congress in California’s 32nd congressional district and the first American woman of Chinese descent to co-found and run a bank, added, “Representative Steel’s Democratic challenger in this year’s election shamelessly touts his Asian heritage but was caught on camera making racist remarks about Representative Steel’s accent. Worse yet, he is on the record supporting Harvard’s institutional racism against Asian applicants.”
“By endorsing Representative Steel, our PAC is supporting equal rights and holding accountable politicians who clamor for racist policies,” said Chu. “We look forward to Representative Steel’s victory in November.”
Note: At the time of the endorsement, we were the Equal Rights for America PAC. Since then, we have changed our name to American Ideals PAC.
